Description: The Radiation Oncology nurse works with a multidisciplinary team to provide care for patients in our Radiation therapy department. The nurse will provide the cancer patients and their family with clinical treatment, education and psychosocial support to achieve the best outcome for patients. This position will have minimal direct patient care and requires strong organizational skills.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:
The RN position requires working closely with nursing staff and a team of oncology professionals in a fast-paced environment.  He / She performs a wide variety of duties involving the clinical care of patients receiving radiation therapy treatments and assisting the clinic staff with duties. Works alongside nurse (s) in the department as needed or directly with the physician in assessing and treating new, current and follow-up for radiation oncology patients.
Manage incoming patient referrals by gathering all pertinent information from a variety of sources for initial consultations.  Assists in coordinating the scheduling of patient consultations, simulations and follow-up visits.
Prepare for patient visit by gathering relevant data, ordering necessary imaging / lab for patients coming for consultations or follow-up care. 
Demonstrates nursing assessments to include:
Assess patients for radiation therapy side effects and provide appropriate nursing interventions.
Educates patients and family members regarding their specific diagnosis, treatment and management of side effects. Provides emotional support to patients and families. Makes appropriate referrals to community and hospital support services, such as social work, home care, hospice, etc., as needed.

Assists physicians during patient exams and procedures performed in the department which may require moderate sedation.
Maintains comprehensive and accurate records of patient activities, including exams, diagnostic testing, medications, cancer treatments, referring physician information, etc.
Assist in the maintenance and care of equipment and supplies including maintaining stock, checking for expired materials and ensuring center exam rooms are stocked and equipment is in working order.

Abides by departmental policies and procedures to include infection control, blood borne pathogens, precautions, radiation safety, and HIPAA.
Appropriately refers questions, requests or problems to supervisors.
Manages necessary referrals to ancillary physician offices as deemed necessary.
Addresses all communication from patients and physicians in a timely manner.
Responsible for appropriate patient charges for the physician.

Responsible for communicating with the billing department to receive pre-authorizations for treatment and outpatient testing which may include CT, MRI, etc.
Attending weekly meetings to discuss collaboration of care and quality improvements in the department.
