Description:

This 20 bed ICU, in a Joint Commission approved Primary Stroke Center hospital, cares for the critically ill patient. Our patients admitted to this unit are both medical and surgical. Our unit population includes cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical, ortho-neuro or medical disorders requiring extraordinary care on a continuous basis. The patients admitted to this unit frequently require ventilatory support, titrating drips, external ventricular drainage (EVD) monitoring and other invasive monitoring. Nurses in this unit also provide continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and Therapeutic Plasma Exchanges (TPE). This nurse will be required to exhibit critical thinking and decision-making skills as well as demonstrate accurate assessment abilities. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 allowing the nurse to collaborate with the health care delivery team, the patient and their family for a coordinated plan of care. Support staff is an intricate part of the team on this unit. ACLS is preferred but can be obtained through our education department free of charge to employees! Orientation for new graduates includes an initial 2 week "Kick Start" program followed by a structured 12-week program with a preceptor on the unit. New nurses with less than one year experience will be enrolled in a one-year Nurse Residency Program. New nursing staff will also attend a 2-day Critical Care Course with other classes specific to critical care and equipment during the year. Seasoned nurses wishing to work in this unit but do not have Critical Care experience will be offered an orientation based on their experience and level of comfort.
